Continuing on the Tactical Wading theme introduced in part 18, England International Jeremy Lucas now moves on to consider this important part of our approach in more detail and how we should not be afraid to wade!
"..there is a rapidly increasing number of river fishers out there who recognise the value of wading technique in the whole gamut of factors that influence the effectiveness of our approach."
"Wading is, after all, very much a part of fly fishing on the frontier, and, let’s face it, successful river fishing per se."
Jeremy Lucas continues his current series on the more in-depth techniques and "tactical" approach to fly fishing with his thoughts on wading - an often overlooked or taken for granted part of fly fishing.
Fresh from qualifying comfortably for the English national squad at the 2008 CEFF English National Final held at Bewl Water in Kent last weekend, Jeremy Lucas keeps his promise to share the details of the 'washing line rig' which was used to great effect by many of the competitors.
Continuing the theme started in Part 15 last time on the use of micro dry flies, England International Jeremy Lucas now moves on to how to best present these tiny flies on the gossamer leaders needed.
"...with dry fly, and particularly micro dries, we must work so much more efficiently and sensitively with the conditions, particularly the wind."
Are we all fishing too big most of the time - should we not be sizing our flies to the insects available to the fish on any particular day? Jeremy Lucas covers the growing trend towards micro dry-flies, why they work and how to get the best out of them.
"I wrote before about sensitive take detection and its importance in hard fished waters where we have to present small, imitative nymphs on fine tippets. I gave the general construction of a long (necessary) leader for this, as used by the top European fly fishing teams. I have been experimenting for some time with these and have added certain refinements. To be more precise, I have been fortunate enough to see or use several other anglers’ ideas on this, including those of Luois Otano Perez, of the Spanish First Division of competitive fly fishers."

In this installment of his 'Fishing on the Frontier' column, Jeremy Lucas looks at the various styles of leader construction and how they can improve your odds in specific circumstances. We are also introduced to the "next level of take detection" - the coiled leader indicator! More of which is planned for future installments also.
This month, England fly fishing international and Fish&Fly team member Jeremy Lucas moves on to look at a techinque often used on rivers when there is no apparent surface activity to seek out fish feeding lower down in the water column. Is this a better technique than the ubiquitous "Duo" - read on and see what you think!?
